US President Donald Trump has launched a scathing attack on NATO in a social media post, calling the alliance ‘a paper tiger’ without American support and labelling member nations ‘cowards’. Trump criticised NATO for refusing to join military action against Iran and for not assisting in reopening the Strait of Hormuz despite complaining about high oil prices. His post stated: ‘Without the USA, NATO is a paper tiger. They did not want to join the fight to stop a nuclear-powered Iran. Now that fight is militarily won, with very little danger for them. They complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz.’ Trump described reopening the strait as ‘a simple military manoeuvre’ with ‘so little risk’ for NATO members. The post concluded with a warning: ‘Cowards, and we will remember.’ India Today’s Geeta Mohan noted that Trump has opened multiple fronts, with tensions over NATO predating the Iran conflict, and his message contains implications for America’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine war.
