In a tragic encounter with militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district on July 16, Sepoy Ajay Singh Naruka, 24, and Sepoy Bijendra Singh, 25, both from Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan, were killed. The incident unfolded just hours after Ajay had assured his family he would be home around July 20. When his coffin reached his home, draped in the tri-colour, Sepoy Ajay Singh’s bereaved father respected the military protocol while rendering a final salute to his son.
Ajay’s last visit home was three months ago. He is survived by his wife Shalu Kanwar and parents, Kamal Singh and Salochana Devi. Ajay’s family has a proud tradition of military service, with his uncle Sujan Singh killed in a Maoist attack in 2021 and another uncle, Kayam Singh Naruka, awarded the Sena Medal for gallantry. Bijendra, from Dumoli Kalan, also had a strong military background, and his brother Dashrath Singh is currently serving in the Army. Bijendra’s family is struggling to cope with his loss, with relatives trying to shield them from the devastating news.
