In an exclusive session at the India Today Round Table in Chennai, DMK Member of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran defended Tamil Nadu’s welfare schemes against ‘freebie’ allegations. Maran argued that initiatives like the ₹1,000 direct cash transfer for women and free laptops for students are essential tools for social empowerment and the ‘Dravidian model’ of governance. He highlighted that Tamil Nadu accounts for 43% of India’s female manufacturing workforce and maintains a GSDP stronger than states like Uttar Pradesh. During the interview, Maran sparked controversy by claiming the judiciary has been compromised, labeling judges as ‘indirect slaves of the BJP.’ He justified the state’s high DISCOM borrowings as necessary for achieving 100% electrification and infrastructure growth. Addressing the political entry of actor Vijay, Maran dismissed him as a ‘B-team of BJP’ directed by Prime Minister Modi and Amit Shah. He further clarified the DMK’s alliance strategy, explicitly ruling out power-sharing with the Congress party in the state cabinet while criticizing the AIADMK’s past governance.
