A significant political realignment is underway in Tamil Nadu as the DMDK, led by General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth, has officially joined the DMK-led alliance for upcoming elections. This marks the first time the DMDK has allied with the DMK since the party’s founding in 2005. Vijayakanth confirmed the decision was based on internal party consensus and cited unfulfilled promises from the BJP and AIADMK regarding a Rajya Sabha seat as a reason for leaving the NDA. The BJP criticized the move, labeling DMDK a ‘minority party’. Amid these shifts, Congress MP Karti Chidambaram commented on the landscape, questioning if actor Vijay’s new party, TVK, has a voter base that will translate into a ‘victory factor’. Chidambaram also offered a critique of the national INDIA bloc, suggesting ‘Rahul Gandhi and the Congress is the biggest liability’ for allied parties and proposed a rotating leadership model with regional leaders like MK Stalin or Mamata Banerjee.
