INSV Conina, the Indian Navy’s newly built ancient-style sailing vessel, showcases India’s rich maritime heritage through traditional craftsmanship — including wooden hulls, hand-stitching, and designs inspired by a 6th-century Ajanta mural. On board, naval officers, architects, and sailors describe the challenges of constructing and operating the ship using age-old techniques, with no engine and complete reliance on sails. As the crew prepares for its first major voyage to Muscat, the project — conceptualised by economist Sanjeev Sanyal and backed by the Prime Minister — aims to reconnect India’s youth with the country’s long and forgotten seafaring legacy.
