A political controversy has erupted over the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe in Dharmasthala. The investigation began after a man named Chinnaya, a former sanitation worker at the temple, made allegations, which led to the SIT digging for remains. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has staged a massive protest, alleging a conspiracy by the Congress government to tarnish a Hindu pilgrimage site. A BJP spokesperson questioned the probe’s motives, stating there is a "selfish intent of the Chief Minister, the Home Minister… showing the Hindu pilgrimage centre in a bad light." In response, those defending the investigation maintain it is a standard legal process into serious, long-standing allegations of missing persons in the area, dating back decades. Several individuals, including activists Girish Mattanavar, Mahesh Shetty Timorodi, and a YouTuber, have also been summoned or booked in connection with the case.
