An India Today investigation reveals that India’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), is battling severe staff shortages even as it oversees the world’s fastest-growing aviation market. An RTI application disclosed that the Airworthiness Wing has 136 vacancies out of 310 sanctioned posts—a 44% shortage—while the Air Safety Wing has 30 unfilled positions out of 116. An aviation expert speaking on the programme states that over the last five years, there have been almost 50 incidents involving aircraft and airlines, resulting in approximately 320 deaths. The expert emphasises the situation is highly alarming and calls for urgent government action, suggesting the DGCA should be restructured as an independent authority. The RTI response also revealed that detailed audit information on non-scheduled operations and expired aircraft components was not furnished, with the regulator citing technical reasons for non-disclosure.
