At Mahindra Drivers Of Change 2026, Sarah Sham, Principal Designer, Essajees Atelier, spoke about her journey from disappointment at birth to becoming an international designer. She revealed her family’s initial disappointment when she was born instead of a boy: ‘When I was born I did feel the pressure of not being a boy for a long time.’ Sarah, who founded her firm in 2014 as an extension of her family’s 130-year-old antique business, shared her ambition: ‘I don’t want to be the best design studio in India. I want to be the best design studio. Full stop.’ She discussed expanding to Dubai, projects in the US and Europe, and exploring Africa. Sarah offered advice to women entrepreneurs, saying ‘Marry well or don’t get married,’ explaining that a supportive partner is crucial for success. She also spoke about meeting Apple CEO Tim Cook, her approach to social media, and designing pet-friendly and kid-friendly spaces.
