According to the latest Central Pollution Control Board data, ground-level ozone has emerged as the lead air quality threat in Delhi for many days in February and March, signalling a worrying trend. Ozone, formed by vehicle and industrial emissions reacting in sunlight, is now lingering beyond its typical season and turning into a year-round health hazard. Experts warn this highly reactive gas can inflame and damage airways, worsen asthma, and make lungs more vulnerable to infection, especially for children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions. In winter, PM2.5 is the dominant pollutant, but in summers, levels of ground-level ozone and PM10 also rise. High temperatures and intense sunlight accelerate the formation of ground-level ozone, as sunlight reacts with nitrous oxide and volatile organic compounds emitted from vehicles, power plants, and industries. Dry hot weather leads to higher dust levels that disperse significantly in the atmosphere. Vulnerable people like elderly and children should avoid venturing outside, use N95 and N99 masks, limit outdoor activities especially in hot and sunny weather, and protect their eyes with UV protectors.
