A Delhi court has granted Shahjeel Imam 10 days interim bail in the Delhi riots conspiracy case to attend his brother’s wedding and care for his ailing mother. Shahjeel Imam is amongst several accused in the larger conspiracy case linked to the communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020, which killed over 50 people and left several injured. He and others have been in jail since 2020. The interim bail is granted only for 10 days to attend his brother’s wedding and take care of his mother, even as the trial of the case is ongoing. In January this year, the Supreme Court had denied bail applications, as Shahjeel Imam and Umar Khalid have been accused of being the ringleaders and main ideological leaders of the alleged conspiracy. The court stated that long pre-trial detention would not be valid grounds for bail in the case, a judgment that has been widely criticised.
