A series of tragic road accidents involving minors behind the wheel has highlighted a troubling national pattern of illegal underage driving. Recent incidents in Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Pune have resulted in multiple fatalities, including the deaths of 23-year-old Sahil and 33-year-old Dhruvil Patel. In a recent Delhi case, a 17-year-old driving a Scorpio caused a fatal accident, yet the father of the accused reportedly attempted to deflect blame onto the victim. Legal experts point out significant loopholes in the Motor Vehicle Act, noting that while parents can face punishment, the three-year sentence often makes the offence bailable. The current legal framework allows many juveniles to ‘scoot free’ without stringent consequences. There is an urgent need for a complete rehaul of the law to address the exploitation of these loopholes by lawyers and to prevent further loss of life caused by rash driving without a valid licence.
