Delhi government has launched a major campaign to combat air pollution by banning refueling of old vehicles. Diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years are no longer allowed to refuel at petrol stations. This directive from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) follows a 2018 Supreme Court ruling. The ban is being enforced through CCTV cameras and speakers at petrol pumps, alerting authorities about end-of-life vehicles. The move affects an estimated 60 lakh old vehicles in Delhi. While some citizens welcome the initiative as a step towards reducing pollution, others, especially from lower income groups, express concerns about its impact on personal mobility. The ban will be extended to five NCR districts from November 1st. Experts suggest that even well-maintained old vehicles cannot meet current emission norms.
