The Bharatiya Janata Party has questioned her participation, citing her views on Goddess Chamundeshwari and her past statements regarding Kannada language and its cultural representation. They contend that Dasara is a celebration of Goddess Chamundeshwari. In response, Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad stated that Banu Mushtaq is a Kannadiga and a prolific writer who has made the state proud by winning a Booker Prize. The Congress defends the decision, asserting that Dasara is a state festival, or Nadahabba, uniting all Kannadigas irrespective of their faith.
