The Dalai Lama’s successor will be born outside China, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism says in a new book, raising the stakes in a dispute with Beijing over control of the Himalayan region he fled more than six decades ago. This is the first time the spiritual leader has made such an unambiguous statement regarding his successor. China has pushed back against the Dalai Lama’s statement, saying that it reserves the right to select his successor given that it controls Tibet.
