Dalai Lama Turns 90, Leaders Gather In Dharamshala To Honour His Legacy | India Today News

The Dalai Lama celebrated his 90th birthday in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, with thousands of devotees attending prayers for his long life. The spiritual leader expressed his hope to live for another 30 to 40 years, serving people until he is 130 years old. Notable attendees included actor Richard Gere, Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and Lallan Singh, and Chief Ministers from Arunachal Pradesh and Karnataka. The celebrations occurred against the backdrop of tensions with China over the Dalai Lama’s succession. The Dalai Lama recently stated that his successor would be chosen by the India-based Garin for Drunk Trust, a non-profit organization he established, rather than any other authority. This statement was interpreted as a message to China. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju emphasized that the Dalai Lama institution is purely religious and that the Indian government believes in non-interference in religious matters.
