Cyclone Remal: Severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ weakened into a cyclonic storm on Monday morning, with sustained wind speeds of 80-90 kilometres per hour, following its landfall around midnight on Sunday, according to the Meteorological Department. The weather system, located 150 km northeast of Sagar Island at 5.30 am, brought torrential rain to Kolkata and the coastal districts of West Bengal overnight. It is expected to move northeastwards and further weaken, the department stated in a bulletin. The Kolkata airport authority has also resumed operations after being shut down yesterday due to Cyclone Remal.
