As Cyclone Alfred moved closer to Australia’s rain- and wind-beaten east coast on Saturday, it weakened into a tropical low but still posed a threat of causing significant flooding on swollen rivers. The former tropical cyclone has forced thousands of people to evacuate and blacked out over a quarter of a million homes and businesses. The tropical storm was slowly making its way to the coast, bringing heavy rains before it crossed the continent, but it was no longer able to produce gale-force gusts. "Despite its weakening, heavy rainfall is likely to continue over southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales during the weekend," according to the meteorological agency. The 400-kilometer (250-mile) length of coastline that crosses the two states could still experience "dangerous and life-threatening" flash flooding as a result of the rainfall.
