Cuba Suffers Third Nationwide Blackout Amid US Oil Blockade | US-Israel Iran War
Cuba plunged into a third nationwide blackout in just one week (and the third this month), leaving more than 10 million people without electricity. The national electrical grid suffered a "total disconnection," according to the energy ministry, triggering immediate restoration efforts that prioritize essential services like hospitals and water supplies. The grid operator UNE is working to gradually restore power amid chronic fuel shortages worsened by the ongoing US fuel blockade, which severely limits foreign oil imports needed to fuel power stations and an ageing infrastructure already strained for years.
The blackouts have fueled rare public discontent, including pot-banging protests in Havana and an unauthorised demonstration that targeted a Communist Party headquarters in Morón (where such actions can lead to imprisonment). President Miguel Díaz-Canel referenced a "preparation plan" for defense against potential US aggression, while Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio insisted Cuba’s political system remains non-negotiable. Amid reports of US President Trump’s push to remove Díaz-Canel as a condition for easing the embargo, a delayed Mexican socialist aid convoy carrying solar panels, food, and medicines is en route to help alleviate the crisis.
