Following child deaths in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan allegedly due to contaminated cough syrups, the Uttarakhand government has launched raids on medical stores and wholesale drug dealers. Health Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar stated that drug inspectors will collect samples from hospitals and shops across all districts for laboratory testing. His directive specifies that “any defective or harmful drugs can be immediately removed from the market.” This action aligns with a central government advisory, which Chief Medical Officers have been ordered to implement. The Central Drug Standard Controller Organisation (CDSCO) has also begun risk-based inspections of drug manufacturing units in six states. Officials are cautioning against the prescription and sale of certain cough syrups for young children, particularly those under the age of five, as checks and sample collections continue across Uttarakhand.
