Cough Syrup Deaths: IMA Questions Why Doctors Are Being Jailed For Prescribing Govt-Supplied Medicin

Numerous deaths of children have been reported from many states after the consumption of specific cough syrups, leading to the jailing of doctors who prescribed the medication. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) questions this action, arguing that the buck stops with the government and drug regulators. According to the IMA’s National President, Dr. Dileep Bhandushali, doctors are not responsible as they prescribe medicines supplied to government hospitals and are unaware of their purity. He stated, “But for them, why is the doctor responsible for this? He has given a cup syrup which has been supplied in the government hospital.” The IMA contends the focus should be on the pharmaceutical company, which allegedly has a history of producing problematic medicines, and the drug controller. The association has pledged to fight “tooth and nail” for the release of the jailed doctor and for a proper inquiry to find the real culprits.
