Three children’s deaths are confirmed after consuming a substandard and adulterated cough syrup, leading to a major crackdown. The medicine, ‘Coldrif’, was found by Tamil Nadu’s FDA to contain dangerous levels of the toxic chemical DEG. Consequently, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala have banned its sale and distribution. In Rajasthan, an initial ‘clean chit’ to the manufacturer was reversed after public outcry, leading Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma to suspend Drug Controller Rajaram Sharma. The government has also blacklisted the manufacturer and banned 19 of its medicines from purchase and production. A reporter on the ground noted, "The day this incident happened, the owner of the factory locked the factory and left. Since then no one has come here." The owner remains unreachable, and the factory has been closed for over a week.
