Following multiple child deaths in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh linked to cough syrup consumption, the Centre has taken action. The Union Health Secretary is set to hold a video conference with all states and Union Territories, which will include Principal Secretaries, Health Secretaries, and Drug Controllers. The meeting’s agenda focuses on the "rational use of cough syrups and quality of drugs." This response comes after the ‘cold rift’ syrup, manufactured in Tamil Nadu, was found to contain high levels of diethylene glycol, which is suspected to have caused kidney-related diseases leading to the deaths. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSO) has already directed the Tamil Nadu FDA to initiate strict action against the manufacturer of the implicated syrup.
