Cherry Blossoms Paint Shillong Pink as Festival Draws Global Visitors
The much-anticipated Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival returned in full bloom this year, transforming the hill city into a spectacle of pink hues as thousands of visitors thronged Meghalaya to witness India’s only autumn cherry blossom celebration. Organised with support from the Government of Meghalaya and the Ministry of Tourism, the festival has become one of the state’s biggest cultural showcases.
From electrifying concerts by national and international artists to cosplay competitions and indigenous food and craft stalls, the three-day extravaganza offered a blend of nature, music, culture and youth expression. Ward’s Lake and the Polo Grounds emerged as the main crowd magnets, illuminated under vibrant lights as the cherry blossoms peaked across the capital.
Beyond celebrations, the festival has emerged as a major driver of eco-tourism and community livelihood. Local entrepreneurs, especially women-led groups, reported strong business as hotels and homestays recorded near-full occupancy. Officials say the festival strengthens Shillong’s position on the global travel map while also deepening cultural ties with East Asian nations.
