The Tamil Nadu Congress took to the streets in Chennai with a padayatra, strongly attacking the Centre over the repeal of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA) and its replacement with the VB G Ram G scheme.
Led by Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka and TNCC chief Selva Perundhagai, the Congress said MGNREGA was a crucial lifeline for rural India, especially during the COVID-19 crisis, and warned that the new scheme would burden states by forcing them to bear 40 per cent of the cost.
The party alleged the removal of Mahatma Gandhi’s name reflected the Centre’s ideological hostility and claimed the changes would hit millions of poor households and push them at the mercy of corporates.
The BJP has rejected the charges, saying the new scheme will create long-term infrastructure assets and bring meaningful change. NDTV’s Sam Daniel reports from Tambaram, Chennai.
