Senior Congress MP Manish Tewari questioned India’s foreign policy conduct regarding the West Asia war in an interview. He raised concerns about India’s silence on coercive regime change, targeted assassinations, and abductions of functionaries of sovereign governments. Tewari specifically asked, ‘Should India not have criticized the assassination of a sitting president as also condoled the deaths of 196 innocent schoolchildren who going by the New York Times report were ostensibly killed by a US missile strike?’ He emphasized that with the Strait of Hormuz blocked and 3,000 ships idling in the Persian Gulf, India faces disrupted supply lines for crude oil, natural gas, fertilizers, food, and essential drugs. Tewari noted India’s import dependence on crude oil has increased from 77 per cent to 86 per cent in the past 12 years, and LNG dependence has risen from 30 per cent to 47 per cent. He stressed the need for a full parliamentary debate on the crisis, citing historical precedents from wars in 1962, 1965, and 1971 when Parliament remained functional and engaged during national security crises.
