In a significant development within Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, Congress functionary Palani Kumar has openly advocated for an alliance with actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Speaking at an event attended by Congress MP Manickam Tagore, Kumar suggested that a tie-up with TVK could secure 70 seats and lead to the ‘ouster’ of the ruling DMK. He expressed frustration with the current alliance, stating, ‘only if we join Vijay we can work’ and ‘we are not able to speak against DMK.’ This internal friction follows Chief Minister MK Stalin’s firm stance against power-sharing, a demand recently raised by several Congress leaders. The remarks highlight growing impatience within the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) regarding their role in the DMK-led alliance ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. While the Congress high command remains in talks with the DMK, such ‘controversial’ statements from party functionaries signal a potential shift in strategy or bargaining tactics.
