According to three individuals who spoke to Reuters on Friday, February 14, Rwandan-backed M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo made it to the vital Kavumu airport, which serves Bukavu, the provincial seat of South Kivu.
M23 insurgents were also seen close to the airport in a social media video. By comparing the location and layout of the buildings, the landscape, and the vegetation in the video with satellite footage of the region, Reuters was able to independently confirm the location. The footage showed a tank and clothes that matched file pictures from M23 insurgents. Although the date of the video’s recording was not confirmed, Reuters reports that corroborated the footage showed that M23 forces were moving close to the Bukavu airport.
