A political firestorm has erupted in West Bengal over the alleged gang rape of a second-year medical student from Odisha in Durgapur and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s subsequent controversial remarks. The Chief Minister sparked widespread outrage with her comment, ‘The girls should not be allowed to go outside (college) at night. They have to protect themselves also’. While the BJP, led by Locket Chatterjee who clashed with police after being stopped from meeting the survivor, has launched protests, the ruling TMC has defended the government, citing the ‘Aparajita Bill’ aimed at stricter punishments for such crimes, which they claim is stalled by the Central government. The survivor’s father has condemned the Chief Minister’s statement, expressing fear for his daughter’s safety. The Chief Minister has since claimed her words were ‘deliberately distorted’.
