CM Devendra Fadnavis Finalizes SC Sub-Classification To Ensure Fair Reservation In Maharashtra

Amid rising demands for reservation from communities like the Banja and Dhangar in Maharashtra, the state is preparing for a significant policy shift. A senior government figure has revealed plans to introduce sub-classification within the Scheduled Caste (SC) category to ensure reservation benefits reach the most deprived sections. This move follows a Supreme Court opinion favouring such measures. The plan, based on a high court judge-led committee report, is in its final stages. "In Maharashtra too, our sub-classification is in the final stage, we will probably announce it in the next two-three months," the speaker stated. The discussion also touched upon the complexities of identity politics, the government’s role in balancing the aspirations of various communities, and the broader, evolving national debate on reservation, including the application of the ‘creamy layer’ concept to ensure affirmative action targets those in genuine need.
