Chinese & Philippine coast guard ships collided at sea, damaging at least 2 boats. A new flashpoint in the increasingly alarming confrontations in South China Sea. The first collision took place near Sabina Shoal, a disputed atoll in Spratly Islands. It created a hole in the deck of the Philippine ship with a diameter of about 5 inches. About 16 minutes later, another Philippine ship was rammed twice in its port . Sabina Shoal lies about 140 kilometers west of the Philippines’ Palawan province. Spratly Islands are known in Chinese as Nansha Islands, including Sabina Shoal. China has been at odds with many other nations over its sweeping maritime claims. The South China Sea is a strategic and resource-rich waterway. Belligerent Beijing is in the midst of a massive military expansion. A 2016 arbitration ruling by a UN tribunal invalidated Beijing’s claims. China did not participate in the proceedings and rejected the ruling.
