China’s military has continued large-scale live-fire drills around Taiwan for a second day, prompting Taipei to place its forces on high alert and condemn Beijing as the world’s “biggest destroyer of peace”.
More than 130 Chinese aircraft and 22 naval vessels were detected near Taiwan in 24 hours, the island’s defence ministry said, calling the exercises a sign of aggression. The drills, named Justice Mission 2025, simulate a blockade of Taiwan’s key ports and follow Washington’s approval of an $11 billion arms package for Taipei.
President Lai Ching-te urged calm while stressing that Taiwan would not provoke conflict. Beijing described the exercises as a “stern warning” against separatism and foreign interference. The drills have disrupted flights, affected over 100,000 travellers, and drawn international attention as tensions rise across the Taiwan Strait.
