A new type of stealthy conventional attack submarines with air-independent propulsion (AIP) that can carry powerful hypersonic missiles is being developed by China. A Chinese semi-official publication said that these submarines, which have long-range attack capabilities comparable to those of their nuclear-powered equivalents, may be employed as a deterrent against the US Typhon missile system stationed in the Philippines.
