The 90th birthday celebrations of the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala have sparked a fresh controversy over his succession. China has claimed that the Dalai Lama cannot decide on his successor, while India, through Union Minister Kiran Rijiju, has backed the Tibetan leader’s right to choose. The Dalai Lama recently stated that his successor would be chosen by the India-based Gaiden Forum for Drum Trust, a non-profit organization he set up. This declaration has been seen as a direct message to China. The birthday event drew thousands of devotees and dignitaries from around the world, including actor Richard Gere and several Indian ministers. Amidst the celebrations, the Dalai Lama expressed his hope to live for another 30 to 40 years, serving people until he’s 130.
