China And Russia Call For An End Of Sanctions On Iran Over Nuclear Program
China, Russia and Iran held talks on Iran’s nuclear program on Friday after U.S. President Donald Trump pushed to jump-start a new deal. Chinese vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with Russian deputy Foreign Minister Ryabkov Sergey Alexeevich and Iran’s deputy Foreign Minister Kazoo Gharibabadi in Beijing. The three called for a termination to U.S. sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program in a joint statement read by Ma. The talks came after Trump wrote a letter to Iran’s supreme leader in an attempt to jump-start talks over Tehran’s rapidly advancing program. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has mocked Trump, saying he isn’t interested in talks with a “bullying government”, although Iranian officials have offered conflicting signals over the possibility of negotiations. China and Russia, along with France and Britain, took part in the original 2015 Iran nuclear deal preliminary framework agreement. China and Russia have particularly close relations with Iran through energy deals. Iran has provided Russia with so-called “kamikaze drones” in its war against Ukraine.
