Speaking at a literature festival in Kasauli, Chidambaram contrasted it with Operation Black Thunder, which he called the ‘right way’ to handle the situation. The remarks have drawn a sharp rebuke from within his own party, with fellow Congress leader Rashid Alvi questioning the timing and motive, stating, ‘Mujhe lagta hai koi dabaav to nahin hai unke upar’ (‘I feel he might be under some pressure’). The Congress reaction alluded to pending criminal cases against Chidambaram, suggesting his comments might be influenced by external pressures and were helping the BJP. Chidambaram also clarified that the decision for Operation Blue Star was a cumulative one and couldn’t be blamed on Mrs. Gandhi alone.
