CDS Chauhan Questions 1962 War Folly, Slams Nehru's 'No Air Force' Decision | India Today News

India’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Anil Chauhan, has questioned the decision not to use the air force during the 1962 Sino-Indian war. He stated that using the Indian Air Force "would have slowed down the Chinese offensive considerably". General Chauhan noted that the Jawaharlal Nehru government may have considered the use of air power as escalatory, a stance that has changed over time. He contrasted the 1962 approach with India’s current military strategy, as seen in Operation Sundur in 2025, where forces are given a "free hand". The CDS also commented on the uniform application of the "forward policy" in different terrains like Ladakh and the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), now Arunachal Pradesh. The comments highlight a significant transformation in India’s defence policy.
