Researchers at a university in Mexico have developed a method to detect planets orbiting cataclysmic variable (CV) binary stars—extreme systems where a white dwarf draws material from a red dwarf companion. These interactions form a heated accretion disc, and any nearby planet can cause oscillations in the system’s Lagrangian Point. These disturbances change the system’s brightness, offering a new way to identify hidden planets. The findings were published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society and could reshape how we search for exoplanets in extreme environments.
