A new wildfire erupted north of Los Angeles and quickly expanded to more than 9,400 acres (38 square kilometers), fanned by high winds and dry vegetation, forcing more than 31,000 residents to evacuate. The Hughes fire, located approximately 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Los Angeles, put further strain on the region’s firefighters, who had already brought two significant fires in the metropolitan area under control.
