Bryan Clark, Senior Fellow and Director of the Center for Defense Concepts and Technology at Hudson Institute, discussed the challenges facing the United States in lifting Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that the US cannot lift the blockade on its own, explaining, "The Mrs.5 just doesn’t have enough ships to spare to do that escort mission, which could require dozens of ships." Clark noted that while Iran’s Navy has been largely eliminated, Iran can still close the strait using ground-launched drones and missiles from the shoreline. He suggested the US may eventually need ground troops to eliminate Iranian missile and drone threats, though this would be a last resort. Clark indicated that the most likely off-ramp would be negotiating with Iran to allow merchant vessels through the strait, which could lead to de-escalation.
