UK PM LIVE: Britain Sign Billion Dollar Chagos Deal With Mauritius For Control Of US-UK Air Base
On May 22, 2025, the United Kingdom signed a landmark agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, while securing a 99-year lease to retain control over the strategically significant Diego Garcia military base. Under the terms of the deal, the UK will pay Mauritius £101 million annually—amounting to £3.4 billion over the lease term—to maintain joint US-UK operations at the base, which is vital for counterterrorism and intelligence missions in the Indo-Pacific and Red Sea regions
