Brazilian President Lula da Silva responded defiantly, saying, “The world doesn’t need an emperor,” and emphasizing that BRICS seeks to reorganize the global economy in a fairer way. Trump’s threat, issued as the U.S. moves to finalize trade deals before his July 9 deadline for imposing “retaliatory tariffs,” follows his earlier warning in February of “100% tariffs” on BRICS if they challenge the U.S. dollar’s dominance. Lula noted such discomfort shows BRICS’ growing influence, even as Brazil scaled back on proposals for a common currency within the bloc.
