The opposition has resubmitted a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla after a technical error in the initial notice, which incorrectly cited the year 2025 instead of 2026. The motion, signed by 118 MPs from the INDIA bloc, alleges that the Speaker has acted with bias and denied opposition leaders the opportunity to speak in the House. While parties like the Congress, Samajwadi Party, and DMK have supported the move, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has notably not signed the notice yet, with Abhishek Banerjee stating they are reviewing the process. Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi also did not sign the petition, citing parliamentary propriety. Despite the symbolic significance of the move, the government maintains a comfortable majority in the Lok Sabha with 293 members, compared to the opposition’s 214. The Speaker has directed the Secretary General to examine the notice as the house continues to face disruptions over the standoff.
