Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Iran’s new supreme leader, stating he is confident Mojtaba will continue his father’s work with honour and unite the Iranian people. Putin confirmed Russia’s unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with Iranian friends. China has also warned against targeting the new Iranian leadership. The 56-year-old Mojtaba Khamenei succeeds his father Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at a challenging time for Iran. He has worked closely with his father and has experience in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Habib Brigade, including fighting against Iraq. The United States and Israel oppose the leadership transition, with former President Donald Trump stating that new leadership should have his approval. Tel Aviv has indicated that the new leader will be a prime target of military strikes.
