Breaking News: Mamata Banerjee Meets CEC Gyanesh Kumar In Black To Protest Against SIR In Delhi

On this India Today report, Shreya Chatterjee provides details on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) in the National Capital. Accompanied by Abhishek Banerjee and Kalyan Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) delegation wore black as a mark of protest against the SIR. Shreya Chatterjee notes that the meeting lasted over an hour, during which the TMC presented data alleging ‘at least 152 alleged deaths related to SIR that has taken place’ in Bengal. The delegation included 12 family members of deceased Data Entry Operators (DLOs) who reportedly died due to SIR-related pressure. Shreya Chatterjee highlights that Mamata Banerjee had written six letters to the CEC prior to this meeting. The ‘black protest’ aims to convey the TMC’s stance that the SIR exercise is ‘creating havoc in the state of Bengal’. The programme examines the friction between the TMC and the Election Commission regarding state-level administrative exercises.
