Iran’s foreign ministry has dismissed US President Donald Trump’s recent statements on dialogue, alleging he has ulterior motives. According to Iran, Trump’s comments aim to decrease energy prices and buy time for further military planning. While Trump suggested productive dialogue with Iran is underway, Tehran insists this is not the case. The developments come amid a 25-day military conflict, during which the US has been unable to reopen the Straits of Hormuz despite intense bombing campaigns. Oil prices, which climbed over $120, began falling after Trump’s statement that he would not target Iranian oil or power infrastructure. Iran has threatened to push oil prices above $200. Military analyst Sandeep Punnathan suggests Trump’s pause statement is aimed at cooling markets ahead of the US weekend, while an amphibious ready group positions itself near the Straits of Hormuz. Iran continues to retain missile-firing capability, maintaining leverage over the United States in the ongoing standoff.
