The Supreme Court has reserved its order on a plea filed by Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma, challenging an in-house inquiry committee’s report that indicted him in a high-profile cash scandal. The controversy erupted after a fire at Varma’s official Delhi residence on March 14, 2025, revealed a large amount of partially burnt cash, estimated at ₹15 crore, though not officially confirmed. The inquiry panel, comprising Justices Sheel Nagu, G.S. Sandhawalia, and Anu Sivaraman, concluded that the cash was under Varma’s “covert or active control,” prompting former CJI Sanjiv Khanna to recommend impeachment proceedings. Justice Varma, represented by senior advocates including Kapil Sibal, denies the allegations, alleging a conspiracy and procedural lapses in the inquiry. The Supreme Court, led by Justices Dipankar Datta and AG Masih, questioned the plea’s maintainability, with a special bench set to address constitutional issues raised.
