In a major counter-terrorism success in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces eliminated a top Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) commander named Usman (also known as Abu Maviya) during an encounter in the Billawar area of Kathua district on January 23, 2026. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, a joint operation by the Indian Army, J&K Police, and CRPF resulted in a brief firefight where Usman, a long-active foreign terrorist linked to multiple attacks in the Udhampur-Kathua belt, was neutralised. From his possession and the site, forces recovered advanced 5.56mm steel-core bullets with green lacquer coating, specifically designed for US-made M4 carbine rifles. These armor-piercing rounds are capable of penetrating standard bulletproof jackets used by Indian security personnel, highlighting the upgraded weaponry militants are employing to counter protective gear.
The recovery of these sophisticated bullets underscores the persistent threat from Pakistan-based terror outfits like JeM, which continue to smuggle high-end arms and ammunition across the border to target Indian forces. Usman was considered one of the most wanted JeM operatives in the region, and his elimination marks a significant blow to the group’s operational capabilities in Jammu. Security agencies are probing the supply chain of the M4-compatible ammunition, suspected to originate from international black markets or cross-border networks.
