A political row has erupted in Maharashtra following remarks by State Congress President Harshwardhan Sapkal comparing Tipu Sultan to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Speaking on the bravery of the Mysore ruler, Sapkal stated, ‘As a symbol of bravery, we should view Tipu Sultan as equivalent to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.’ The statement triggered violent clashes between Congress and BJP workers in Pune, leading to stone-pelting, vehicle vandalism, and several injuries. BJP Pune City President Dhiraj Ghate condemned the remarks, accusing the Congress of ‘appeasement’ and stating that the comparison hurts the sentiments of Hindus who revere Shivaji Maharaj. Following the unrest, Pune police detained several protesters from both sides to bring the situation under control. A case has been registered against Sapkal at the Parvati Police Station under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for provocation and hurting religious sentiments. While the ground situation is currently reported as stable, political tensions remain high as leaders continue to exchange heated rhetoric over the controversy.
