BREAKING: Air India Flight Veers off Runway in Mumbai Airport, Escapes Terrible Accident | Mumbai
An Air India flight from Kochi to Mumbai experienced a runway excursion this morning at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) due to heavy rainfall. Flight AI-2744, an Airbus A320, veered off the main Runway 27 shortly after touchdown around 9:27 AM. While the aircraft reportedly sustained some damage, including the bursting of three tires and potential engine issues, it managed to taxi safely to a parking bay.
Fortunately, all passengers and crew onboard the flight disembarked without any injuries, averting what could have been a far more severe incident. Mumbai Airport authorities swiftly activated emergency response teams to manage the situation. The incident, however, led to minor damages to the primary runway (09/27), prompting its temporary closure. To ensure continuity of operations, the secondary runway (14/32) has been activated, allowing flights to continue with minimal disruption.
Both Air India and CSMIA have released statements emphasizing that the safety of passengers and crew remains their top priority. The aircraft has been grounded for thorough checks and a team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is on-site to investigate the circumstances surrounding the runway excursion. This incident underscores the challenges faced by airlines and airports during heavy monsoon conditions, which have historically led to similar occurrences at Mumbai airport.
