Supporters of Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro held a national protest demanding amnesty for him on Sunday, while calling for the impeachment of President Lula and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
In Rio de Janeiro, one of Bolsonaro’s sons, Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, addressed a large crowd protesting in Copacabana Beach.
"If you want to save yourselves, I say to the abusers of the country, it’s not just about saving Brazil, but if you want to save yourselves, let’s make a broad, general and unrestricted amnesty as this country has had on other occasions," he said.
Thousands of protesters held signs calling for amnesty, the impeachment of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
These demonstrations took place across the country just days after De Moraes said Friday that the country’s top court will not yield to sanctions or foreign pressure over the trial of Bolsonaro, which is expected to take place later this year.
Earlier in the week, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against De Moraes for alleged suppression of freedom of expression, and Trump signed an executive order imposing a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods.
The U.S. government cited what it described as the “political persecution” of Bolsonaro as the reason for its actions.
